Growing up in the country, we always had a garden.
Dirty feet were common.
I often shucked corn on the front porch.
It all sounds very “Little House on the Prairie”, no?
Up until now, it hasn’t really bothered me that I live in the city and don’t have a garden. However, now that my diet consists of mostly fruit and vegetables, I am obsessed with having a garden. I think about it far too often, especially since the reality of having my very own garden is at least 3 years away.
What is this strange desire to plant and grow and harvest? Is this just my biological clock again?
Whatever the psycho(logical) explanation, I decided to feed this affliction with a little dirt and seed.
The green pot in the front is the former home of a Greek oregano plant that I purchased at the farmer’s market. I loved it, but it was quickly outgrowing its’ abode. As long as I was going to be in “get dirty and plant stuff” mode, I decided to make a project of it.
The Salsa Garden package had tomato and pepper plants as well as spices, but I decided that tomatoes and peppers weren’t really going to be a good option for my kitchen table garden. I gave them to someone who actually has a garden instead.
My seeds of choice consisted of plain leaf parsley, chives, sweet basil, and cilantro. I love herbs, and these just happen to be my 4 favorite herbs.
Mmmmmm…cilantro!
It was very easy to plant the seeds, I just filled the colorful pots 3/4 full of organic potting soil, sprinkled the seeds on top, then covered with more potting soil to the top. I gave them a drink, and then proceeded to spend the next 3 hours cleaning dirt out of the grout crevices of my tile-top table. Probably not the best idea to do this project without first covering the table. Live and learn.
Now, I have a cute little spice garden on my table.
The jury is still out regarding whether they’ll actually sprout and grow.
Fingers crossed!
