When I rededicated myself to weightlifting at the end of February, I quickly realized why people feel intimidated with the thought of moving away from the cardio equipment at the gym.

Cardio is so…comfortable.

It’s so easy to walk in the gym and just hop on one of the many pieces of cardio equipment for 40 minutes and call it a day. You don’t have to think about what you’re doing because the machine kind of does everything for you. And there’s usually a TV in front of you to boot.

For four years, the treadmill was like my own personal La-Z-Boy.

When I started weightlifting again, I instantly remembered why I fell in love with it in the first place. It makes me feel spunky.

If you ever asked me to describe myself in one word (even when I was much younger), this is the word that I’d use. I identify with this word. It’s MY adjective.

Mizfit talked about this very thing a couple of years ago. I left a comment back then to tell her what my one word was, and looking back at it now, I realize that I am at a completely different place in my life than I was back then. Leave it to the Internet to remind me (again) of how far I’ve come.

I read this comment now, and I’m like “oh my wow…did I really ever have to TRY to let myself be loved?!” I’m amazed. Love is so free and flowing now. It’s natural. It wasn’t back then…it felt foreign and uncomfortable.

Kind of how I felt about weightlifting 2 months ago. My, how quickly things change in Joggersville!

When I walk into the gym now, I don’t gravitate towards the treadmill. In fact, I try to stay off of the treadmill as much as humanly possible (although, I do have The Boilermaker 15K in July to train for). I’ve found that mixing my workouts up as much as possible, and including free weights, body weight exercises, and cardio into the same workout gives me the biggest workout bang for my buck.

It makes me feel spunky. Strong. Confident. Determined. Generous.

Giveaway!

Be your own boss! #giveaway

A few weeks ago, in one of my crazy confessions, I admitted to you that I was becoming a chronic slacker. There were several revelations within that post, but the most important (in my opinion) was the admission that I was putting my fitness goals on the back burner and bunking any supposed 2011 race calendar, in the hopes that I “might be pregnant” in the spring.

My favorite time to race is in the spring.

And by “race”, I mean “keep up with the moms pushing double strollers”.

I was pretty much declining all of my friends’ invitations to complete races with them because I had developed this irrational fear (after my failed pregnancy) that failed pregnancies are a side effect of working out. Let me explain…

[if you possess more testosterone than estrogen, this part will bore you. Just scroll down to the pictures and continue.]

During the short amount of time that I was pregnant, I was working out. Of course I was trying to keep things under the threshold of where I would normally push myself, but I was holding up my normal workout schedule. I found out I was pregnant on Friday, September 3. On Saturday, My Gazelle and I did our normal TRX bootcamp workout. I ran on Monday, did weight training on Tuesday, and then on Wednesday I went to my regularly-scheduled spin class.

I honestly wanted life to be “business as usual”, zygote or no zygote.

I was feeling a little goofy on Wednesday. I can’t really explain what “goofy” means, but I just felt tired and kind of out of breath all day. I attributed it to my early pregnancy, and I just kept it movin. Before spin class, I was stretching out. I felt something weird like a butterfly in my stomach. I described it to My Gazelle as a little “Bloooop!” in my belly.

I proceeded to do my normal spin class, at a much lower intensity than I would normally do.

The following day, I started having symptoms of miscarriage (which turned out to actually be an ectopic pregnancy).

In my brain, I blamed the whole terrible situation on my “business as usual” workout schedule. Rationally, I know that it’s insane and that plenty of women work out through their entire pregnancy. I did a 15K race in 2008, and a woman who was 7 months pregnant beat me by like 15 minutes. I ran that very same race with my bestie who was 6 months pregnant with her son at the time.

Exercising while pregnant is healthy. Research indicates that it makes for healthier Moms and babies, and it makes the process of delivery easier a lot of the time.

Coupled with my fear of getting injured (after everything I dealt with in 2009), I ended up being literally afraid to run or work out.

I had to get over this irrational fear. I had to start running again. I love running. I had to start living my life the way that I did before. I had to start signing up for races.

As I also mentioned previously, I don’t want to be injured in 2011 as I was during most of 2009 while I was training for 1/2 marathons and my (only) marathon. Extreme distances tend to not agree with my body. They cause me ITB Friction Syndrome, Bursitis, nervous breakdowns, crying episodes (you can read a full recap here). Long distances work for some people, but not so much for me.

When my rational brain kicked in and decided that my legs needed to get busy, that same rational brain decided to adopt a much more kinder, gentler approach to training in 2011. If I’m focusing again on running, as I did during 2009 (2010 was the year of the triathlon!), I needed a better way to get it done.

I bought Jeff Galloway’s book.

About Jeff:

“Jeff’s quest for the injury-free marathon training program led him to develop group training programs in 1978, and to author Runner’s World articles which have been used by hundreds of thousands of runners of all abilities. His training schedules have inspired the second wave of marathoners who follow the Galloway RUN-WALK-RUN™, low mileage, three-day, suggestions to an over 98% success rate.”

[you can read more about him on his website if you're interested]

The basic premise behind the training is that by doing a low mileage training program (2 short runs, 1 longer run) per week, coupled with a RUN-WALK-RUN schedule during the runs, you minimize the damaging effects that long distance running does on your body.

I’m all over it, people.

I love the idea that I can still do longer races, but not get jacked up because of it.

With the Galloway method, you figure out your race pace and then train according to the guidelines in the plan. Personally, I’m planning on having fairly slow race times this year, and my training pace right now is around 12:00 miles. Truthfully, that’s not a lot slower than the standard 11:00-11:30 miles I was running before. I’ll trade off that slight loss on pace so that I don’t get injured.

I’m doing 3:1 intervals. RUN 3 MINUTES: WALK 1 MINUTE: RUN 3 MINUTES…REPEAT until the time or distance goal is accomplished. My pace is slower (and I have to continue reminding myself that the goal for 2011 is to just finish these races), but as a result, my body feels surprisingly great after I’m finished running.

I love it.

Something else that I also love is the Gymboss.

The wonderful Jake from Gymboss contacted me shortly after I announced that I was going to be doing the Galloway method, and asked me if I would like to have a Gymboss interval timer to help with my training.

I LOVE THE GYMBOSS.

I’ve used it now for about 3 weeks, and I can’t tell you how great it is specifically for the purpose of running intervals. Since I’m running outside sometimes (with proper reflection of course), I am not able to see my Garmin because it’s too dark outside. Before I had the Gymboss, I would have to wait until I was directly under a street light to check my Garmin time, and 90% of the time, I had missed my interval cue.

The Gymboss has several different settings, and can be set to vibrate or audibly chime when your interval cue has arrived. The vibration is great for when I’m at the gym and don’t want to disrupt everyone (or for when I’m using my iPod during the run), and I use the chime when I’m outside. The Gymboss is small, lightweight, and clips snugly onto your shirt or waistband. I actually clip mine right on my iPod armband in order to centralize most of my gadgets.

This little green doo dad has made my life a ton easier, and I’m looking forward to spending many (many) training miles with it!

Many uninjured miles.

As I previously mentioned, Jake is wonderful. He has offered to give one of my readers their very own Gymboss. He might even let you pick the color, but you’d probably have to ask nicely.

The Rules:

Go to the Gymboss website, and leave a comment telling me what color Gymboss you’d pick.

One entry per person.

Contest closes at 12PM on Wednesday, December 22nd.

Good luck!

I'm an enabler. You can thank me later.

Today, I decided to have a giveaway.

Why?

Because I finished my second triathlon on Saturday.

Also, because last night I made vegan zucchini muffins (thanks Sarah!) with the zucchini that my Grandma gave me when I saw her on Sunday.

And while the zucchini muffins were baking, I was boiling the red skin potatoes that my dad dug up for me from his garden, also on Sunday.

And while the red skin potatoes were cooking, I was dunking My Gazelle’s pork chops in a pasty mixture of flour and coconut milk, then dredging them in corn flakes.

(No, there is no hidden meaning in that “pork chop” reference…although it sounds like fun.)

And then I whipped up some biscuits.

And green beans.

And then, as I washed the dishes in my bathtub, I cried salty tears of kitchen remodeling projects gone awry.

(Actually, that’s a lie. My Gazelle washed the dishes in our bathtub. He’s not much of a crier, but I cried for him).

I got no freakin’ kitchen, man!

OK, that’s a lie too. I sort of have a kitchen. But, is it really a kitchen if there is no running water? I feel like that’s some sort of building code or something.

I have to admit that this is actually a pretty sweet mixing station, despite the hole(s) in the wall(s). And even though the “countertop” is a little ‘teeter-y’.

I have this untenable need to cook and bake, especially in times of stress and anxiety. Cooking and baking are great stress relievers for me. My lack of a proper kitchen has equated to a huge bout of stress and anxiety in my life. Huge. So, I’m stressed out about not having a kitchen, which makes me want to use the kitchen. I use the kitchen, then get stressed out because I essentially have no kitchen. It’s like a viscous cycle that I can’t escape.

I’m sure you can understand my need to self-medicate this morning. Several weeks ago, I instituted “Starbucks Wednesdays” in my department. What began as a way for me to justify my addiction to Starbucks Venti Sugar Free Vanilla Iced Coffee, turned out to be a great way to liven up Hump Day.

There are 4 other employees in my department, and they love “Starbucks Wednesdays”. When your girl walks in the office holding a tray full of grande Frapp and latte goodness, my girls yell “YAY, STARBUCKS WEDNESDAYS!”

Trust me, making them smile makes me smile too.

I recommend doing this with your employees. Everyone loves Starbucks, and even people who don’t drink coffee can still partake in a Frappuccino, iced tea, iced chai, or some sort of fruity drink. There are tons of choices.

And, because I need to feel loved right now, I’m buying your love with a giveaway.

*p.s…Starbucks has no idea who I am, and they have not provided me with a gift card for this giveaway. I’m buying this gift card for you because I like to enable people so that I can justify my own addiction. Your welcome.

Coconuts are our friend. People make ice cream out of coconuts, and then give me coupons to give to you. It's a win/win situation.

****UPDATE 5/6/10 : GIVEAWAY CLOSED! WINNER WILL BE CHOSEN SOON!!

Did you know that Early Spanish explorers called the coconut ‘coco‘, which means “monkey face”, because the three indentations (eyes) on the coconut resembles the head and face of a monkey?

I think that’s pretty cute.

The coconut is very versatile, and is one few natural foods that is able to provide several different byproducts (meat, juice, milk, and oil). According to the Coconut Research Center, “Nearly one third of the world’s population depends on coconut to some degree for their food and their economy.” I found that to be a very interesting fact, since the coconut is definitely viewed as a delicacy in the United States. In fact, I think it’s viewed as more of a “what the heck do I do with that thing anyway?” type of food.

In addition to being mildly confusing to Americans, I feel that many people have also been programmed to shy away from the coconut due to the high fat content in the meat, milk, and oil. However, the benefits of coconut (especially coconut oil) are beginning to become more and more apparent. On Tuesdsay, it was mentioned in the Times of India that a UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering student is having positive results in treating acne with lauric acid (found in coconut oil), and plans to release the results of the study soon.

Research, especially in the area of coconut oil, is blowing up. If you click this link, you can see a search I did with the word “coconut” in both the title and abstract of the study. There are 68 studies listed since January 2008. The potential is there, now the research just needs to be followed through.

Coconut is our friend.

Personally, I have incorporated many coconut products into my life over the past year. Although I would consider myself to be more of a ‘flexitarian’ now, (although I primarily eat a vegetarian diet, I’ll eat fish or chicken or eggs if I feel like it), I don’t like the effects that dairy products have on my body. I know that there is conflicting research about the whole dairy/mucus problem, but personally, I notice a difference in my asthma when I eat conventional dairy products. I had ice cream last night while My Gazelle and I were enjoying a rare dinner out, and I woke up this morning searching for my sinus rinse because I couldn’t breathe!

In place of the organic dairy milk that I was buying each week, I started buying So Delicious Coconut Milk instead. Seriously you guys…I do everything with the stuff. It’s awesome. I also stopped using my standard Bath & Body Works and Victoria’s Secret lotions and began moisturizing with coconut oil (this is the one I use). My skin has never been softer, and I don’t feel bad when the dogs accidentally eat it. Yep, true story.

Speaking of ice cream.

Coconut ice cream, y’all!

I’ve tried a few different brands of coconut ice cream because, well…I love ice cream, but I hate being snotty. Some of them have been mediocre. The usual problem I have with unconventional products are the texture. When we become accustomed to eating a particular product, we also become accustomed to the texture of the product. When a company comes up with an alternative to the original, they honestly have to hit the texture dead on for me to like the impostor version.

If the product tastes amazing, sometimes I can forget a minor flaw in the texture.

However, I make no exception when it comes to ice cream. Ice cream is gold.

A few weeks ago, I was probably ranting about something on Twitter (as I usually am), and Kiley from Luna & Larry’s (Coconut Bliss) heard me. She probably just wanted me to stop complaining about having to go to the gym or something, but in any case, she offered to send me some Luna & Larry’s coupons to try out their products.

“Umm…heck YEAH!” (said the ice cream lover)

She noted that she would send me coupons for two pints, as well as one box of ice cream bars, but also mentioned that I might not be able to find the bars right now because my nearest Luna & Larry’s retailer (Whole Foods) just started carrying the bars.

Last weekend, I drove to Whole Foods (which was much closer and took me a lot less time to drive to than I originally anticipated) to pick up my booty. Miracle of all miracles…they HAD the ice cream bars, as well as several different flavors in the pints! I was very excited, and I might have done a happy dance right there in the aisle at Whole Foods. There’s no shame.

I “bought” a pint of Mint Galactica

a pint of Vanilla Island

and, the Dark Chocolate Bars

Of course I tried both of the pint flavors as soon as I got home. In the same bowl. Eaten quickly to avoid melting together. (While I held a Dark Chocolate Bar in my free hand).

First, and most importantly, the texture is amazingly similar to conventional ice cream. It was not grainy (as I’ve often noticed in other products), and it also wasn’t like the texture of Italian Ice or sorbet (which I’ve also noticed in other products). This was like the real deal…smooth, creamy, and it didn’t leave that crazy film on your tongue like some other products do.

I tried the vanilla first, and I have to admit that there was a definite coconut flavor. Since I love coconut, this wasn’t off-putting to me, but I would imagine that someone who isn’t cuckoo for coconuts wouldn’t enjoy the vanilla flavor. While trying the vanilla, I was simultaneously eating the Dark Chocolate Bar, and the texture and flavor amazingly resembles that of the traditional fudge pops that my mom used to buy. Loved it!

However…the mint galactica…

OH, THE MINT GALACTICA!

This flavor is like heaven in a cardboard pint. If a Girl Scout Thin Mint cookie and a peppermint patty had an open marriage with vegan buttercream frosting from Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World, and then had a baby together (I don’t know how…you do the math on that one), THIS would be their lovechild. And she’d look like Halle Berry’s daughter. Because Mint Galactica is beautiful.

And, because Kiley loves you, she wants you to try out your favorite Luna & Larry’s love children for FRIZZLE!

You can be the proud Mama (or Daddy) of two pints and one box of bars of your choice, for the low price of one little comment on this post.

1) To enter, just answer this question in the comments section: “What is the worst impostor product that you’ve tried?”

2) If you’ve never tried an impostor product, just leave a comment and tell me your favorite kind of ice cream and I’ll still let you enter…because I’m mostly just being nosy anyway.

3) If you’d like an extra entry, just tweet this: @joggerslife is giving away @LunaandLarrys Coconut Bliss, and I want some! You can have some too! http://bit.ly/cb2aKW

4) You can also get an extra entry for mentioning the contest on your own blog. Just link to the contest (http://www.joggerslife.com/2010/cuckoo-for-coconuts/), I’ll see it in my pingbacks, and I’ll record it as an extra entry for you!

This contest will close next Thursday, May 6, 2010, at 12noon.

Good luck!!

GIVEAWAY CLOSED–I’LL BE DRAWING A WINNER AT 5PM ON MONDAY, MARCH 22, 2010!

I seriously picked up a stage 5 case of “Disney World Ick” while I was on vacation.

I don’t know the origin of this hacking, coughing, (barking), ailment that I’ve come down with, but I want it to exit the premises immediately. Immediately. I’m not a very good sick person–it cramps my style.

Coughing gives me a headache. Makes me grumpy. Causes people to stare at me like I beat their child while waiting in line with Monica at ULTA.

(sorry Monica. first impression was awesome, right)?

Despite my sickly condition, the lovely people at Dick’s have again offered Joggerslife the opportunity to give away a $50 gift card to a lucky reader. I’m much less contagious-y via email I suppose.

SO, if you’d like to enter the giveaway to win a $50 gift card to Dick’s Sporting Goods, all you have to do is leave a comment and let me know:

What the heck are you going to buy with your $50 gift card, and why?!

One entry per person please! Add my feed to your reader so that you’ll know if you won–I don’t email winners! One winner will be chosen on Monday, March 22, 2010. U.S. residents, age 18 and over only please.

Good luck!

Oh, the pain! I still can't bend my arms...all because of this workout.

Remember way back in May, when My Gazelle and I were being held hostage in our development and could not get to the gym on an especially gym-worthy day?

Are you kidding me?

You don’t remember?

It’s OK. I only remember because I was there. If you haven’t seen that post though, it comes highly recommended by me, since it includes pictures of my sexy future husband.

Hot sexy men aside, we were once again held hostage in our house last Sunday, this time due to Mother Nature’s decision to dump 20″ of snow on a cross section of the country that is completely unprepared for weather of that sort.

Despite the fact that the news channels were hyping it up to be “The Blizzard of 2009″ approximately 24 hours before it even began snowing, they weren’t ready. Call me crazy, but I would’ve expected that the Highway Department received the memo.

Apparently not.

And thus, we were stuck in our house for two days, which wasn’t a total catastrophe, since I got a lot of baking done. The problem came in when I was scheduled for a date with the gym on Sunday, but they were closed.

Luckily, My Gazelle is studying to be a personal trainer, and he is obsessed with workout contraptions. As a police officer, his schedule is wonky, and sometimes he enjoys working out at home more than going to the gym. For this reason, we have the Bodylastics system, Elastic Bands, yoga mats, weighted balls, a TRX system, several wheely contraptions, as well as countless other “things” that I cannot identify.

We were thoroughly prepared to be snowed in, from a physical-fitness perspective.

And the workout we did, even 3 days later, still has me crying out in pain every time I try to scratch my nose.

No, really. I’m not kidding. I’ve developed this masterful way of raising my right arm slightly, then bending my head so that my nose can meet my arm halfway.

Ridiculous, yes. But, ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

So, we busted out the TRX Suspension Trainer, a yoga mat, and the PowerWheel.

(This is not me. She is like 5 million times more skilled than I).

At the time, I had no idea that these three things could make it impossible for me to type on my keyboard for more than 5 minutes without taking a break. My arms are literally unable to hold themselves up for any longer.

It’s been THREE days, people!

I must note that my hamstrings are also sore, but not even close to the same degree as my triceps. Due to the pain that I’m still experiencing, I think it’s only fair to share this agony with you.

If you need a video explanation of any of the TRX exercises, just go here for the video tutorials.

Here is the ridiculous workout:

Dual Supersets (SS)–three sets of each…

SS#1:

(1)TRX Incline Pushup immediately into an Overhead “Y” Raise (12-15 reps)

(2)Standard Pushups (or 5 standards and 20 girly pushups if you’re me)

*Rest 1-2 minutes after doing both exercises, but not long enough to drop your heart rate too much. The idea of a superset is to get your heart rate up as if you’re doing cardio.

*Do a total of 3 sets, then move on to the next superset.

SS#2:

(1)TRX Back Row (10 with palm facing upward grip, 10 with palm facing downward grip)

(2)PowerWheel Pikes (12-15 reps) *This is where life became difficult for me. These things are no joke, and I wasn’t able to do them on my hands after the first 2. I moved to my elbows/forearms, and was able to finish.

Again, rest 1-2 minutes after each exercise block and before moving onto your next set. Do 3 sets, then move on to #3.

SS#3 (We made this one a triple-set):

(1)TRX Front-Facing Squat to Biceps Curl to Triceps Push Down (Yep, pretty sure this is the one that got me good).

(2) PowerWheel Hip Thrusts (hello, hamstrings!) & Medicine Ball Situps (15-20 reps of each)

(3) PowerWheel Forward Roll-Outs (Um…hello core, and triceps, and ow…everything hurts!

After you finish 3 sets of this block, you should be sweating your arse off. Take a shower and a nap.

I can’t specifically say which exercise made me the most sore, but I am positive that the combination of both has led to my agony. I had never used the PowerWheel before, but I fully intend to make it part of my life at least twice a week from now on. I have dreams of doing more than 5 pikes without having to move to my elbows. Oh, what a happy day that will be!

If you have not yet invested in the TRX or the PowerWheel, you absolutely should. Both of these contraptions are great ways to use your own body weight to become stronger.

And, I want to help. PowerWheel is not paying me to tell you how great their product is, and they have no idea who this Jogger even is, but I want to give one of you lovelies your very own PowerWheel.

Happy Holidays!

Just leave me a comment and tell me about the oldest ornament on your Christmas tree. If you don’t celebrate Christmas, just tell me about your favorite holiday tradition or your best holiday memory.
