Cuckoo For Coconuts

by on April 29, 2010

****UPDATE 5/6/10 : GIVEAWAY CLOSED!  WINNER WILL BE CHOSEN SOON!!

Did you know that Early Spanish explorers called the coconut ‘coco‘, which means “monkey face”, because the three indentations (eyes) on the coconut resembles the head and face of a monkey?

I think that’s pretty cute.

The coconut is very versatile, and is one few natural foods that is able to provide several different byproducts (meat, juice, milk, and oil).  According to the Coconut Research Center, “Nearly one third of the world’s population depends on coconut to some degree for their food and their economy.” I found that to be a very interesting fact, since the coconut is definitely viewed as a delicacy in the United States. In fact, I think it’s viewed as more of a “what the heck do I do with that thing anyway?” type of food.

In addition to being mildly confusing to Americans, I feel that many people have also been programmed to shy away from the coconut due to the high fat content in the meat, milk, and oil. However, the benefits of coconut (especially coconut oil) are beginning to become more and more apparent. On Tuesdsay, it was mentioned in the Times of India that a UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering student is having positive results in treating acne with lauric acid (found in coconut oil), and plans to release the results of the study soon.

Research, especially in the area of coconut oil, is blowing up. If you click this link, you can see a search I did with the word “coconut” in both the title and abstract of the study. There are 68 studies listed since January 2008. The potential is there, now the research just needs to be followed through.

Coconut is our friend.

Personally, I have incorporated many coconut products into my life over the past year. Although I would consider myself to be more of a ‘flexitarian’ now, (although I primarily eat a vegetarian diet, I’ll eat fish or chicken or eggs if I feel like it), I don’t like the effects that dairy products have on my body. I know that there is conflicting research about the whole dairy/mucus problem, but personally, I notice a difference in my asthma when I eat conventional dairy products. I had ice cream last night while My Gazelle and I were enjoying a rare dinner out, and I woke up this morning searching for my sinus rinse because I couldn’t breathe!

In place of the organic dairy milk that I was buying each week, I started buying So Delicious Coconut Milk instead. Seriously you guys…I do everything with the stuff. It’s awesome. I also stopped using my standard Bath & Body Works and Victoria’s Secret lotions and began moisturizing with coconut oil (this is the one I use). My skin has never been softer, and I don’t feel bad when the dogs accidentally eat it. Yep, true story.

Speaking of ice cream.

Coconut ice cream, y’all!

I’ve tried a few different brands of coconut ice cream because, well…I love ice cream, but I hate being snotty.  Some of them have been mediocre. The usual problem I have with unconventional products are the texture. When we become accustomed to eating a particular product, we also become accustomed to the texture of the product. When a company comes up with an alternative to the original, they honestly have to hit the texture dead on for me to like the impostor version.

If the product tastes amazing, sometimes I can forget a minor flaw in the texture.

However, I make no exception when it comes to ice cream. Ice cream is gold.

A few weeks ago, I was probably ranting about something on Twitter (as I usually am), and Kiley from Luna & Larry’s (Coconut Bliss) heard me. She probably just wanted me to stop complaining about having to go to the gym or something, but in any case, she offered to send me some Luna & Larry’s coupons to try out their products.

“Umm…heck YEAH!” (said the ice cream lover)

She noted that she would send me coupons for two pints, as well as one box of ice cream bars, but also mentioned that I might not be able to find the bars right now because my nearest Luna & Larry’s retailer (Whole Foods) just started carrying the bars.

Last weekend, I drove to Whole Foods (which was much closer and took me a lot less time to drive to than I originally anticipated) to pick up my booty. Miracle of all miracles…they HAD the ice cream bars, as well as several different flavors in the pints! I was very excited, and I might have done a happy dance right there in the aisle at Whole Foods. There’s no shame.

FCC

I “bought” a pint of Mint Galactica

Picture 2

a pint of Vanilla Island

Picture 3

and, the Dark Chocolate Bars

Picture 4

Of course I tried both of the pint flavors as soon as I got home. In the same bowl. Eaten quickly to avoid melting together. (While I held a Dark Chocolate Bar in my free hand).

First, and most importantly, the texture is amazingly similar to conventional ice cream. It was not grainy (as I’ve often noticed in other products), and it also wasn’t like the texture of Italian Ice or sorbet (which I’ve also noticed in other products). This was like the real deal…smooth, creamy, and it didn’t leave that crazy film on your tongue like some other products do.

I tried the vanilla first, and I have to admit that there was a definite coconut flavor. Since I love coconut, this wasn’t off-putting to me, but I would imagine that someone who isn’t cuckoo for coconuts wouldn’t enjoy the vanilla flavor. While trying the vanilla, I was simultaneously eating the Dark Chocolate Bar, and the texture and flavor amazingly resembles that of the traditional fudge pops that my mom used to buy. Loved it!

However…the mint galactica…

OH, THE MINT GALACTICA!

This flavor is like heaven in a cardboard pint. If a Girl Scout Thin Mint cookie and a peppermint patty had an open marriage with vegan buttercream frosting from Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World, and then had a baby together (I don’t know how…you do the math on that one), THIS would be their lovechild. And she’d look like Halle Berry’s daughter. Because Mint Galactica is beautiful.

And, because Kiley loves you, she wants you to try out your favorite Luna & Larry’s love children for FRIZZLE!

You can be the proud Mama (or Daddy) of two pints and one box of bars of your choice, for the low price of one little comment on this post.

1) To enter, just answer this question in the comments section: “What is the worst impostor product that you’ve tried?”

2) If you’ve never tried an impostor product, just leave a comment and tell me your favorite kind of ice cream and I’ll still let you enter…because I’m mostly just being nosy anyway.

3) If you’d like an extra entry, just tweet this: @joggerslife is giving away @LunaandLarrys Coconut Bliss, and I want some!  You can have some too! http://bit.ly/cb2aKW

No terrible impostor products (yet), so I’ll go for the ice cream… Hard to pick an all-time favorite, but the most recent flavor I’ve tried that was incredible was Ben & Jerry’s Peanut Brittle. So, so good.

The worst product that I have tried is fat free cheese. UGH. Seriously?

  • http://www.adidasshouldsponsorme.com Chari

Worst imposter product? One word: tofurkey.

  • jen

Chik’n nuggets. I HATE fake meat that is trying to be meat.

  • Chana

I cannot win because Whole Foods is many many many miles away. Unless they sell these little delights at Wegmans….

So my imposter product. Soy Ice Cream. Vanilla – I am wild and crazy. It said first of all that it was healthy. Really? Why is it then that you had almost twice as much sodium as the traditional icecream that I bought the kids? And when I tasted it. Well….. It was more like if sandpaper and cardboard had a baby that they conceived on their honeymoon in the land of bland and then delivered on a salt lick. And it looked like Flavor Flav! Because it was ugly and it made my tongue sad. And more importantly I am cheap, not frugal, just cheap and this icecream was not and as I washed it down the drain (the dog would NOT have eaten it) I wept for my wallet.

The worst impostor product I’ve tried has to be the fake ground beef. I think I’ve only tried the Boca kind…..but the stuff is overly chewy and doesn’t really even taste like meat. I much prefer crumbled-up tempeh….it doesn’t taste like meat either, but at least it tastes good and has an interesting texture!

I laughed when I saw this post because I just spent a whole week extolling the virtue of coconut in all its forms!

Anyway, the worst imposter product… I’d probably have to give it to margarine. I’m such a butter baby, and old-school margarine has all those nasty trans fats! There’s really nothing like REAL butter, anyway.

  • http://fitblogr.com Gina

Tofupups. Worst fake hot dog I have ever tried.

  • http://primalforager.blogspot.com/ Amy

I think the worst imposter food ever is soy cheese. It goes against all that is good and right in the dairy kingdom.

  • http://cupcakebreath.com @stampylisa

the worst imposter food is ANYTHING With SPLENDA/Sucralose or Nutrasweet/Aspartame. You might as well feed me those little green mouse bait cubes. shudder. I LOVE Luna and Larrys, as well as Purely Decadent and anything having to do with coconuts. Tempt is great too w/hemp milk. mmmmm now I want some L&L

  • http://www.connectionsmagazine.org Amanda

The worst imposter product I’ve tried is veggie dogs. I’ve tried various varieties, but haven’t found one I liked yet.

  • http://www.annaaspnes.typepad.com Anna

Take your pick. Soy ice cream, soy protein powder, soy milk, soy yoghurt. Not a fan of soy unless it’s edamame.

  • Kiley @ Coconut Bliss

Thank you for a wonderful review, this is one of the best posts I’ve read in a long time.

Chana we are in Wegmans but they don’t have the bars. The bars have been out for awhile and you might find them at a smaller store near you.
We’ve got a store locator on our website so you can find locations near you.

  • Shari

The worst ever were some vegan cheese slices that were supposed to taste like mozzarella…YUK

  • Kimberly

Worst imposter product: tofu jerky. Gack! Look up vile in the dictionary and there should be a picture of this stuff in there.

On a more positive note, I have see shaved coconut meat smoked and made into bacon-like strips for sandwiches and would love to try that!

  • http://asliceontheside.blogspot.com/ Jen morris

I love Coconut bliss ice cream. The worst imposter is Soy Delicious…ick. The texture is so chalky.
This brand is great for people who follow the Paleo Diet. I Love the Dark Choco flavor…yum, yum!

  • sarah

Worst by far was some veggie cheese, and I laughed after I chose not to eat it, because it still had dairy in it.. Blah!! But Coconut Ice Cream is a new staple, I too switched to coconut milk when we cut diary out and LOVE it….

  • http://www.litegreenliving.com Carrie

    Worst imposter product: GImme Lean!

Thanks for sharing those coupons…can’t wait to taste the luxurious velvetiness of some Coconut Bliss.

  • glenn

i’m with the fake meat product peeps! eww!

  • Jess

Not a fan of any soy milk, latte’s ice cream, etc.. I tried Larry & Luna’s Coconut IC & loved it! Amazingly, our local grocery store carries it, but only 2 flavors. I’ll have to request more flavors!! :-)

  • http://www.austinbabs.blogspot.com Barbara

Worth EVER…Waldon Farms ANYTHING! the marshmellow funk was the worst though..gross.

  • Aura

    Rice and/or soy cheese…yech.
Larry and Luna’s hazelnut fudge swirl is the yummiest ice “cream” that I can buy, hands down.

  • http://www.dijifi.com Andriana

I had some seitan at the restaurant down the street, which was supposed to taste like carne asada..absolutely had the texture of rubber and tasted like freaky marinated rubber. Don’t know the brand, but every time I try meat substitutes I am extremely let down.

On a happier note, my favorite flavor of ice cream is…Mint Galactica. ;)

  • http://www.foodiefresh.wordpress.com Kelly

The very worst imposter product I have ever tried was the Better n’Peanut Butter. Let me save you the trouble and say that that stuff is not better or even as good as the real PB. In fact, it pretty much tasted like chalk paste with unnatural added peanut flavor. I should have known better.

  • Liz

i love mint chocolate chip ice cream! you’ve got me drooling on my keyboard over here :)

  • http://www.halfofjess.com Jess

My favorite kind of ice cream? That’s such a HARD one. THANKS for making me contemplate such a simple question but I’m torn!

I love Ben&Jerry’s Half Baked. And most of their other flavors. But I’m also a huge fan of cookies ‘n cream.

Dude, quick thing about coconut ice cream (well the vanilla flavor). Ok, it might sound GROSS but they eat it like this in Thailand and I love it. Put it on a piece of bread (ooo, if you only eat wheat then it might be weird cause they use white). Sprinkle some peanuts and a few pieces of chopped up fresh fruit (pineapple!). And then add some condensed milk. Try THAT puppy out. It’s so good. Well, I think so at least. *drools*

Most soy copycats are disgusting but Tofutti cream cheese/sour creams are the worst. Ick. I love, love, love Coconut Bliss!!

  • eve

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Coconut!!! mmmmm . having
said that the worst product I ever tasted is coconut milk yogurt. The texture is just like
applesauce. Feels gross! I tried the vanilla yuk!

  • Ricki

Favorite kind of ice cream is Bacio Gelato at Gelato Paradiso. It is just like the bacio candy from italy. Dark chocolate hazelnut.

I can’t eat regular ice cream or any soy products. I love coconut and the coconut bliss sounds so good. I can’t wait to try it.

Almond cheese is like cardboard made up of chemicals. It melts but tastes awful.

    thanks!

  • http://www.girlgetstrong.com sian-girlgetstrong

Yummy! I am going to get my some of this ice cream! Thanks for the review!

  • http://poiseinparma.wordpress.com/ Alicia

My favorite local ice cream shop does monthly specials: we just tried their banana coconut cream last night. AWESOMENESS in a cup! Love this giveaway!

  • http://valshan-thejourneytoabetterme.blogspot.com/ katie

I had an ice cream addiction…but dairy (and 600 extra calories) is the devil, so I had to give it up. When I met coconut bliss’s dark chocolate, it was love at first bite. Being amazing, I eat it slower and savor each spoonful, therefore eating less in one sitting (usually..). It’s better for me and the planet, so I can enjoy this delicious snack guilt free.

As far as I’s concerned, man-made sweeteners are the worst “impostor” products out there. Thank you, coconut bliss, for using agave syrup to make your pint-sized Heaven.

  • http://lindswing.blogspot.com lindswing

Rice dream ice cream bars. Look so good! Taste so horrible!

But, it’s a close tie with tofu dogs. True story: I broke being a vegan once because I got tired of eating fake, nasty “hotdogs” all summer and just wanted a real (can you call them real?) one. The texture, you see, is the key. The tofu ones just taste like squish.

And now I just dream of the day back in the day when I was vegan. I’m like you, though; I’m definitely functioning better when I’m dairy-free.

    worst impostor product: tofutkey…

favorite ice cream: coconut! hands down

  • PATTY

Speaking of ice cream, when I was growing up my father use to buy ice milk (cheaper verison of ice cream). He would have to buy for 7 hungry kids. However, it did treat us on Sundays during the summer to the real stuff. I stopped eating ice cream over a year ago because I would eat all year round. Now very rarely I will have some frozen yogurt, but it has to be natural frozen yogurt. I pass the the coconut bliss at Whole Foods for so long. If I won, I would go all out and try it.

  • http://www.lifegivingenvironments.com Jennifer

I found out about Coconut Bliss a few years ago and LOVE the Mint chocolate & the Choc-Peanut butter. YUM! It’s great to enjoy a dessert & not feel horrible after eating it.

    Thank you Coconut Bliss!

  • Laura E

Thanks for the opportunity! I really wanted to like the Zevia Cola but it was terrible in my opinion!

  • http://cupcakebreath.com @stampylisa

just tweeted @stampylisa and Laura E, Try the other Zevia flavors, they are awesome w/vanilla non dairy coconut milk frozen desserts as healthy cows. Especially Dr. Zevia

  • http://cupcakebreath.com @stampylisa

my favorite kind of “ice cream” is coconut milk or almond milk ice cream. Luna & Larry’s or So Delicious Purely Decadent. The ALmond Dream is one I want to try, but I’m really also digging on the Tempt hemp milk Coffee Biscotti flavor. It freezes really hard though, so I always nuke it 15-20 sec or leave it out for a little while before I want it.

  • Becca

The worst would have to be, as a group, most vanilla soy ice creams that I’ve had… that aftertaste is just too unpleasant!

  • Chana

Beth you are changing the world one blog at a time.

I gave the Luna & Larry’s tip to a friend of mine who is vegan – she went and got them. She loved them and told her network of friends. I just got a call that she convinced some very unhealthy woman in her office to try it. I hope to make a Wegmans trip Saturday to get mine:)

  • Lanita Dillaha

Is it too late to get a free coupon from Luna and Larry’s Coconut Bliss frozen dessert? Would love to try this. I have tried other brands and been severely disappointed and thought it was a pure waste of money. The other brands did not even come close to representing ice cream. So would love to try this for free. Please let me know. Thank you.
