Tiny little known fact – I taught swimming to kids & adults all through high school & college. While there isn’t much I can tell you online and not seeing what you’re doing now and not actually being in a pool with you….what I can say is spend time working on just your arms (say 200 yrds – 8 pool lengths). I’m assuming you’re doing free style (the crawl)? Part of the issue is also finding the right way for the stroke to work with your body. The picture above has someone with a very straight arm ahead and almost a 90 degree angle on the arm doing the stroke. When I swim my arms are mush more bowed and (people here must think I’m crazy b/c I keep doing the arm motions at my desk). Where are you taking lessons and is there a Master Class available? I know you’re calling yourself a beginner but you know how your body works and the MC instructor might have some pointers you could use.

Years ago, before Gregory was born, I took swimming lessons at the YWCA. I still can’t swim :0( It’s one of those things you’ve got to work on yourself and learn your own way of doing. Kinda like driving a car with stick shift, people can explain how to drive it all day long, but until you get behind the wheel and find your own way, it won’t work.
The key for me is relaxing. It doesn’t always work for me. Some days in the pool, I feel like it is effortless. Other days, I feel like I can’t breath.
I don’t know how often you go, but I read somewhere that if you go swimming only once or a twice a week, it will take a while to get everything done.
Finally, Here’s the thing that I remember. Swimming is fun. you might want to take some kids and go play at the pool. Just play swim. Have fun.
That’s the cool thing about a Triathlon to me. When I was little, all I wanted to do was go out and play, bike to unchartered areas, run around, and swim. … hope it helps.
