Fun Fitness Friday (In Which I Nearly Pass Out While Using the TRX)

by on August 13, 2010

Although I seem to be talking a lot about kitchens and weddings lately, I really do still jog, sweat and complain. Really, I do. I’m just too overly-consumed with the former to discuss the latter all that often.

Something else that I have really failed to mention (for fear of over editorializing “The Man”), is that My Gazelle is hard at work studying to become a personal trainer. As part of this process, he recently took a course so he could learn how to train other people on the fitness tool that he loves the most: the TRX Suspension Trainer.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the TRX too. I am never disappointed by a TRX workout, and I am always amazed at the fact that I can be SO SORE after basically only using my own body weight to work out. But…but…he’s just better at it. He looks like he knows what he’s doing.

I just look like I’m suffering.

P1000678edit

He effortlessly breezes through exercises, while suspended in mid-air, at a speed that doesn’t even seem humanly possible.

And I look like I’m about to die while doing a simple back row.

P1000680edit

Oh lordy.

In any case, despite the fact that I nearly passed out on 3 or 4 occasions during this workout, it was really fun. We are probably not what you could call a “normal” couple in any sense of the word, because this was the beginning of our Wednesday date night.

I was going to make reference to the TRX and foreplay, but I changed my mind. But then I just told you about that jaded thought anyway, so I guess that now you know the truth about how my brain processed this workout on date night.

Moving along.

Doesn’t My Gazelle’s outfit make you giggle? Or was that just me? I felt like he looked like a 70′s throwback. It immediately made me think of this image:

napoleon-dynamite-5

All Napoleon Dynamite references aside, this was a really difficult workout.

The point of this workout is to get a good cardio workout as well as body weight training. There are very few rests, and I basically only rested when I felt like I was going to a) puke, or b) pass out. It was very very humid here on Wednesday, so that was my issue.

Here is a good link that describes in detail many of the exercises that we did: Ace Fitness.

TRX Interval Workout:

Warm-up: 2 minutes jumping rope

SET 1 (15 REPS OF EACH EXERCISE)

  • “I to Y”
  • Runner lunges
  • Single leg squats
  • Front rollouts
  • 1 minute plank
  • Jumping rope (2 minutes)

SET 2

  • One armed back row (that’s what I’m doing above when I look like I’m about to die)
  • Chest press
  • Hamstring curls (hips lifted)
  • Suspended knee tucks (CRUNCHES to beat all other crunches)
  • 1 minute plank
  • Jumping rope (2 minutes)

So, this is the part that killed me…the part where I had to REPEAT all of that and do it a second time. That was when I started to see stars and had to sit down a few times.

Luckily, I didn’t actually pass out. Although, that might have been a great story if I had.

Let’s just say that the money spent on My Gazelle’s TRX course was well worth it. He obviously learned a lot, and he gave me a great foreplay workout to kick off our Wednesday date night.

Have you tried the TRX Suspension Trainer before? If not, would you like to?

I am so glad you posted this. My gym is going to start having TRX classes and I had no clue what they were!

Pictures tell the whole story. Yes, The G looks like a natural. You do not. I love you, but you do not. However, I bet you look more graceful that I would. That thing looks seriously scary…and even a little intriguing – but in the naughty way! ;-)

ummm yeah, i just said that!

I love my TRX! I’m with you, it is TOUGH! I can only do the plank for about 20-25 seconds and only on my forearms, but I’ll keep working to improve!

Just a note from a Personal Trainer: If you’re at vastly different fitness levels, with different goals, Maybe you two shouldn’t be trying to do the same workout, at the same intensity?

Maybe one time through the circuit, combined with your running, would be more beneficial?

Also, feeling like you are going to pass out is not necessarily an indication of a good workout. Are you Breathing during these sets , or holding your breath unconsciously when it gets most difficult?

    oooh I COVET the TRX!!!

@John: Actually, we weren’t working out together–I was the only one actively working out, and this workout was built for me.

I am very in tune with my body, and I’m pretty intuitive when it comes to how far I’m able to push myself. I’m no stranger to working out. I ran a marathon, I’ve done 2 triathlons, 2 half-marathons, as well as countless training runs and races. Even before I started running 4 years ago, I was heavily into bodybuilding. I’ve definitely taken myself to my breaking point several times, and this workout was not it.

I’ve done a workout similar to this with my fiance several times. The problem with this workout in particular is that we were outside in the heat and humidity, and I suffer from sinus allergies that throw off my equilibrium. After lying on the ground and getting up quickly several times, I felt faint. I’ve also experienced this feeling of passing out many times while I was doing kickboxing. I’m kind of used to it.

That said, I’m not promoting the idea of the average person working out to the point of total exhaustion or passing out, and I did take several breaks (as I mentioned) during the second part of this workout. I know myself, and I knew why I was feeling faint. If I thought that it was anything serious, I would have certainly stopped.

Loooove the TRX. Just started using it at my new job, and you can do so many things with those two straps! The workout he planned looked great as well! Even if you two were doing the same workout, it’s so easy to modify everything to make it as hard or easy as you need to on that thing, that I wouldn’t be too concerned about having the same plan written out for the both of you. I can’t imagine doing this outside thoughn (Chicago was miserable last week!), so good work!
